Do I need a water softener?
A softener is a real appliance with a real running cost. It is worth it for some households and a waste for others, and the deciding factor is mostly one number.
Start with the number
Find your hardness first, in grains per gallon. Your utility's annual water quality report has it for a municipal supply, a test strip has it for your own tap, and the county figures on this site give a starting estimate.

What it costs to run
Salt is the main running cost, and it scales with hardness and household size. For four people at 15 grains per gallon the calculator gives about 614 lb a year, roughly 16 bags, $123 at typical prices. Add water for regeneration, a small amount of electricity, and occasional resin replacement.
Against that, hard water shortens the life of a water heater, a dishwasher and a washing machine, and costs more soap and detergent every wash. At very hard levels the appliance argument usually wins on its own. At moderate levels it usually does not.
When a softener is the wrong answer
- The problem is iron staining, not hardness. A softener removes modest amounts of dissolved iron as a side effect, but orange staining at more than about 3 ppm needs a dedicated iron filter ahead of it.
- The problem is taste or odour. Hardness has no taste at household levels. Sulphur smell, chlorine taste and similar are filtration questions, not softening ones.
- Someone is on a sodium-restricted diet and the water is very hard. Use potassium chloride, or leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened.
- You are renting. A softener is plumbing. Portable and countertop units exist but do not solve a whole-house scale problem.
The alternatives, honestly
Template-assisted crystallisation, sold as salt-free conditioning. These do not remove hardness. They change how it crystallises so it is less likely to stick to pipes and heaters. Independent testing supports a real scale-reduction effect; they will not stop soap scum or spotting, because the minerals are still in the water. If scale in the water heater is the whole problem, they are worth considering. If soap and spotting are the problem, they are not.
Magnetic and electronic descalers. The evidence is weak and inconsistent.
Point-of-use only. A softener on the water heater feed alone, or a filter at one tap, solves a narrow problem cheaply. Sometimes that is all the problem there is.
