Hard water, hair and skin

Hard water does something real to hair and skin, and it is not what most of the internet says it is. The mechanism is soap scum, not damage, and knowing which one it is changes what is worth buying.

The short answer

Calcium and magnesium react with soap and with the anionic surfactants in most shampoos and body washes to form an insoluble salt: literally soap scum, the same grey film that rings a bathtub. On skin and hair it deposits as a fine layer that does not rinse off in hard water, because the water doing the rinsing is what formed it.

That film is why hair from a hard water shower feels rough and straw-like, looks dull, tangles more and holds less volume, and why skin feels tight and itchy afterwards. The hair and the skin underneath are unchanged. What has changed is what is sitting on them.

What actually helps, cheapest first

  1. A chelating or clarifying shampoo, once a week or two. Chelating agents such as EDTA bind the calcium and lift the existing deposit off. This costs a few dollars and is the only item on this list that removes what is already there.
  2. An acidic rinse. Diluted apple cider vinegar or a citric acid rinse dissolves carbonate deposit and flattens the cuticle. Free, and it works, and it smells.
  3. A shower head filter. KDF-55 and calcium sulphite media reduce chlorine well and hardness barely: there is not enough contact time or capacity in a shower head to soften water meaningfully. If the complaint is dryness from chlorine it helps. If the complaint is scum, it does much less than the label implies.
  4. A whole-house softener. The only thing that removes hardness before it reaches you, and the expensive one. Worth it above 7 grains per gallon for plumbing reasons anyway, at which point better hair is a side effect you have already paid for. Whether it is worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Does hard water cause hair loss?
No. No study has shown hardness causes hair to fall out of the follicle. What it does is coat the hair shaft in soap scum and mineral deposit, which raises friction between strands, so combing and brushing break more of them. Breakage collects in the drain and looks exactly like shedding, which is why the belief is so persistent. If hair is genuinely thinning at the scalp, the cause is not the water.
What does hard water do to your hair?

Do shower filters work for hard water?
For chlorine, yes. For hardness, barely. A shower head cartridge has a few seconds of contact time and a small amount of media, which is enough for KDF-55 to reduce chlorine but nowhere near enough ion exchange capacity to soften the flow. If a filter makes your hair feel better, chlorine was a bigger part of the problem than hardness was. Only a whole-house softener removes hardness.
How do I get hard water out of my hair?
A chelating or clarifying shampoo, which contains a binding agent such as EDTA that grips the calcium and carries the deposit away. Use it every week or two rather than daily, because it strips oils along with the minerals. A diluted vinegar or citric acid rinse does much the same thing for nothing.
Does hard water cause acne?
It has not been shown to. The plausible mechanism is that residue left on the skin contributes to clogged pores and irritation, and irritated skin breaks out more, but no study establishes hardness as a cause of acne. Rinsing well and using a non-soap cleanser addresses the residue either way.
